1. Where do I even start?! All this technical stuff is too much for me!  

One of our clients, Brenda, the owner of a real estate agency, was in the following situation when she came to us:

"A man came to see me about building us a website for our estate agency. I told him one of the things I needed was for the photos of our listed of houses to be updated once a week (I didn't think it would be possible for us to do ourselves - none of us were very good on the computer). He promised to come in weekly and do the updates.

I wasn't very impressed with the website he built us - for a start, getting around on it was difficult and it looked like the info was all over, with no way to get back where you'd been - but I reasoned that must be the way it was supposed to be. After all, he was a website designer! So I paid him for the site and said I'd see him next week. We'd agreed each update, because it would need his extra time and expertise to do, would be paid for separately.

The first week he appeared as expected, made the changes needed and left. The second week, he only came two days after he was supposed to - and we had urgent listings that needed to go up. (We are part of the MLS system, and if buyers don't find what they're looking for with us, we lose a lot of money when they go elsewhere.)

The third week, he never arrived at all. We tried phoning every contact number we had for him and just got the answering machine. No response. So we were left with a less than satisfactory, never mind impressive, website that no one could do anything with. Back to square one! Never mind the cost, I just felt silly."

What I can tell you for sure is that your website is NOT going to work for you if:

1.  ...you can't control when updates and changes are made on your site.  

If you can't edit your website yourself whenever you want, you'll have no choice but to wait until your web developer can do it for you - be it next week or next month!  You simply will not be able to rely on him to make your changes by the time you need them and this will also cost you money in terms of lost sales and opportunities. (No-one is interested in a Valentine's Day special on the 15th of February!)

This situation can quickly turn your website into more of a frustration than a powerful marketing tool. You need to spend your time reaching your clients, not trying to reach your website designer!

2.  ...you have to pay someone else to make every little update for you.  

You'll want to test and tweak things on your website quite a lot in the beginning. You will want to add and edit info to get your site working for you just the way you want it to, based on the needs of your clients in your industry. You'll want to add the info and pictures you know will benefit your clients.

And if you need to pay a website developer to do this for you every time, you won't be able to make half as many changes as you want to because it will simply cost too much.

3. ...your web designer is not a mind reader.  

You know your business and your clients inside out. You know what their questions are and how they need to be answered. This is what you do, what you specialize in. A website developer, on the other hand, specializes in the various aspects of getting a website together.

You know your clients best so you know what they are looking for. Your designer doesn't always. When it comes to changing and updating the info on your website, if you can't do it yourself, the changes you want probably won't come out like you had in mind because your web designer doesn't necessarily completely understand what you want to achieve.

Doesn't it make more sense to be able to make these info updates yourself, rather than spending hours trying to explain what you want - and even more time getting it corrected?

4.  ...you don't have an unlimited budget.  

It's very expensive to keep your website up-to-date and to make regular changes if you have to pay someone to do it every time - and a real waste of money, seeing as you could be doing all of this yourself - at no extra cost! By being able to update your website yourself you'll save thousands throughout the year and have a marketing machine that is always on budget and on target!

But I'm a complete techno-phobe: I'll never be able to handle it myself! Now what?

Let me ask you this: if your daughter, fresh out of high school, was going off to university in another city and needed a car, would you expect her to first learn to be a mechanic, so that she could do all major repairs and overhauls herself, before giving it to her?

Of course not!

But would you expect her to learn to drive it and handle the basics like checking the oil, water and tyre pressure herself? Of course.

And it's the same with websites. You shouldn't be expected to know all about the programming and developing behind the building of your site.  

You need a website that you can use to help you make sales. One that gives you the freedom and flexibility to drive it the way you want to without having to turn to the website mechanic every time you want to do something simple, like change your special or add some new information.

What you don't need is to have to learn to be a web developer to be able to do all this!

Is your website going to be a money wasting dead horse or a sales generating winning stallion?

With normal traditional static websites you cannot change or edit the content of your website at all. Every time you want to add information or move a picture, you need to employ a developer.

The important question to consider here is actually not "What must my website look like?" but

3. What if no-one visits my site?  How do I get it "out there?"
